Elijah
We never came to pick you up
When you would take the bus ride home from school
When we did it made you cry
Said we scared your new friends away
And when you finally got home
You would drop your bag and head out to the woods
Sit beneath the willow tree
Listen what she had to say
And then as you grew older
How those books and songs they took their toll on you
“What’s happening to this country?”
You would shake your head and say
And when you snuck out late at night
We though that you were heading off to James’
We couldn’t even dream
You were at the firing range
Elijah, where you going now?
And now your precious face is on the TV
It’s on my phone and computer screen
You’re telling us that we’re the ones who’re crazy
That freedom was never free
Gotta fight for what you dream
Elijah, whatcha dreaming now?
